SECTION E MAN’S RESPONSE TO GOD THROUGH FAITH AND LOVE SUB - THEME 2: MAN’S EVASION OF GOD To evade God means to turn away, run away, shun, reject Him. PRESENT SITUATION WHY MAN EVADES GOD (CAUSES OF IRRELIGION) Because of; Unanswered prayers which make people think God is less concerned about their affairs. Christianity being seen as a foreign religion yet they are Africans, and therefore some would rather follow other gods than the Almighty God. Tendency to seeing ourselves as the Centre of the world. Influence of Science and technology that forces people to depend on their skills. Conflicts in the Christian denominations that cause doubts among people. Prejudice and racialism practiced by Christians which discourages others. Distorted ideas of God being seen as a white and therefore some Africans see Him as a colonialist. Preachings, church services that seem to be unrelated to real life. Frustration in life. Invisible nature of God. Delay of the second coming of Jesus. Bad examples from Christians and especially religious leaders. Economic hardships. Impatience, thinking God takes long to answer prayers. HOW MAN EVADES GOD Through; Sexual immorality Murder Witchcraft Theft Joining church because of medical and educational services provided. Rejection of God’s divine nature and reducing God to people’s own understanding. Focusing on material things. Putting emphasis on religious denominations rather than trusting God. Struggling for power. Worshiping religious officials, pastors, rather than God. Exploiting the poor. Prayerlessness. THEME OF EVASION IN THE AFRICAN TRADITIONAL SOCIETY Much as the people in African Traditional Society had a deep-rooted belief in the existence of the supreme God, there were times when they behaved contrary to their beliefs.
