BIOLOGY DEPT -2025 Senior five Biology Theory -Set 4 2hours Instructions: Attempt All Items Item 1 Spinach, Spinacia oleracea is a common herbaceous crop used for human consumption in many parts of Uganda . The crop grows well in soils that moderately retain water and this ensures that their stem is upright to support the leaves and fully expose them to light and gase s. When its leaves are harvested, they are prepared as food, but if not well preserved, the spinach food gets spoilt in a short period of time by enzymes produced by microorganisms. Below are the ways people in different parts of the country use to preserve the spinach food. • Spinach food is often heated to a very high temperature after a particular duration • Small amounts of dilute lemon juice are added to the spinach food (Lemon juice contains citric acid) . • A solution containing a chemical which is a non-competitive inhibitor to the enzymes produced by the microorganisms is added to the spinach food. Tasks: a) Identify the simple plant tissues in the stem of the above plant that enable it to stay upright . b) Show how each of the tissue in (a) above enable the plant stem to stay upright. c) Explain how each of the preservative method above prevent the spinach food from getting spoilt. Item 2 Musa and John are commercial farmers in greater Mbale region who grows tomatoes (C3 plant) and maize (C4 plant). Maize grains contain a high percentage of starch nutrients and is one of the main staple energy giving food in the region. Musa lives in the lowlands part of the region while John lives in the Mountain Elgon highlands part of the region. However, the agricultural lands in these two parts of the region …
