Mukiibidavid680@gmail .com 0752162039 1 THE HISTORY OF AFRICA SINCE 1800. THE SOCIAL SYSTEMS IN THE PRE -COLONIAL INSTITUTIONS IN AFRICA AFRICAN PRE -COLONIAL SOCIETIES. African societies before colonial rule were well -organized politically, socially, and economically, despite early European travelers and explorers often describing them as "chaotic and therefore disorganized" due to their lack of understanding. However, a careful study of these institutions reveals a high degree of organization. African societies can be classified int o two types: Decentralized societies, where power was distributed among many political players, and Centralized states, where power was concentrated in the hands of an individual (like a King) or a group. DECENTRALISED SOCIETIES/STATELESS/ACEPHALOUS Decent ralized states lacked centralized leadership. Examples include the Iteso, Karamojong, Masai, Kikuyu, Chagga, and Yao in East Africa, as well as the Ibo of Nigeria and the Tiv of Ghana. • Power and authority were distributed among many political players or ci tizens. • Leadership was not hereditary; it was not passed down by birthright. • Those who held leadership positions did so on a part -time basis, with responsibilities such as leading in war or guiding meetings being part -time jobs. This was observed among the Ibo of West Africa, the Kikuyu, and the Iteso of East Africa. • Decentralized societies also featured advisory councils that handled daily administration. These included village councils or assemblies, which functioned as the legislature or lawmaking body. The village assembly comprised every member of society, making these societies highly democratic and egalitarian. • The village assembly collaborated with the council of elders, made up of wise elderly men who knew the society's history.
