Welcome to A-level! Senior 5 (S5) marks the beginning of advanced studies leading to the Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) [1]. Unlike O-level’s broad curriculum, A-level demands specialisation – you’ll study just 3 principal subjects in depth [1][2].

The UACE Subject Structure
Principal Subjects (Choose 3) [1][2][3]
Your three principles define your speciality:
Science Combinations
- PCB/Sub-Math: Physics, Chemistry, Biology + Subsidiary Mathematics
- PCM/ICT: Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics + Subsidiary ICT
- BCM/ICT: Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics + Subsidiary ICT
Arts/Humanities Combinations
- HEG: History, Economics, Geography
- HEL: History, Economics, Literature
- Languages: Luganda, Kiswahili, Literature options
Business/Mixed
- MEG: Mathematics, Economics, Geography
- PEM: Physics, Economics, Mathematics
Subsidiary Subjects (Compulsory for All) [1][2][4]
- General Paper: Mandatory for everyone
- Subsidiary Math OR Subsidiary ICT: Depends on your principal subjects
Students taking Principal Math MUST take Sub-ICT [4]. Science students without Principal Math take Sub-Math [4].
S5 vs O-Level: Key Differences

Challenges Unique to S5
1. The Abridged Curriculum (2025 Cohort) [5][6]
Students from the new CBC O-level system (2025 onwards) will follow an abridged A-level curriculum as a transition measure [5][6]:
- 2 essential subjects
- 1 vocational subject
- 1 contemporary studies subject
2. New Selection Criteria [7][8][9]
S5 selection now considers letter grades (A-E) from UCE, not aggregate scores [7][8]. Top schools require minimum grades of A or B for competitive combinations [8][9].
Study Strategies for S5 Success
Develop Independent Study Habits
A-level teachers won’t spoon-feed. You must:
- Research beyond textbooks: Use reference materials
- Form study groups: Discuss complex concepts with peers
- Attend consultations: Teachers are available for questions
Master Time Management
With fewer subjects but more depth:
- Allocate equal daily time to all 5 subjects
- Use weekends for essay writing (Arts) or problem-solving (Sciences)
- Don’t procrastinate on coursework
